Most of the classics of Greek philosophy were translated into Arabic during the ninth and tenth centuries (C.E.). Their rationalist tendencies imposed upon Judaism (as well as Islam) a new set of challenges. All authentically Jewish responses derived from antecedents in Biblical, Talmudic, and Midrashic literature. But the formulations themselves, like the challenges, were new. Ironically, these are essentially the same challenges we face today.
